ROYAL VISIT

On Saturday 5th November the royal couple visited Point Reyes as part of an eight day trip to the United States. The first two stops were in New York and Washington where they lunched with President Bush. Then they spend a day and a half in West Marin  visiting organic farms.

The royal's first full day was marked by improbabilites. The heir to the British throne offered to share his glass of beer with the Old Western Saloon owner. Camilla, his bride of seven months, picked up an heirloom apple and munched on it, later chatting with an owner of sheep about knitting.

The man who has three personal valets to make sure he is impeccably dressed happily shook the weathered dirt stained hands of local farmers. The couple spent 90 minutes at the farmers market outside Toby's Feed Barn, far more time than was scripted. Stopping at one booth Charles talked to a small group of farmers about sustainable agriculture, which is his abiding passion. He has been farming organically since 1985, a time when the movement was barely getting started. He is considered a leading proponent. Charles does not accept the contention that organic farming can only provide a small percentage of the world's food supply.

Later after touring organic farms in Bolinas, Camilla and Charles had a private dinner at Mankas one of the many restaurants in West Marin that offers organic food on their menus.

"It's an amazing honour and it's a confirmation that our efforts here in West Marin are important far beyond our country line." said Marin Organic executive director Helge Hellberg.

CUSTOMER QUOTES

"It was such fun at breakfast with the innkeeper recounting tales of her travels and life in England. It was everything an English b and b could be and we didn't have to fly 6,000 miles to experience it."

"Just one hour from the city but Olema is a different world. As we sat in the garden by the cottage, the peacefulness and beauty washed over us."
